We had a short day today, 25 miles -- but we came through the biggest lock of it's kind just east of Little Falls NY -- the lift is over 40 feet, and the gate is raised vertically out of the water so you enter under the gate, and it drops behind you. (Pictures in the morning) As long as the currents leading into the lock aren't too much, it is pretty straight forward -- but your crew has to be prepared to grab lines that are hanging from the side, and simply hold on (the Captain is excused this duty since she is the Captain!)
Experienced our first underway heavy rain -- James and Ellen remarked about the comfort of being dry while taking watch. It is now hot and muggy -- so we are all encamped inside the boat with the air conditioning on (it took several tries and following all the plumping lines to make it work, but it is)
There is a LOT of debris in the water -- hit a big hidden thing today that made us all jump -- but everything appears to be okay.
